T’was the Year 2008

T’was the year 2008 and from Jan to December,
Each month in sports was one to remember.

January saw LSU win the Bowl,
Starting off 6-0, the Tigers would roll.

Marion Jones then exchanged shoes for thugs,
Spending six months in the pen for lying about drugs.

Feb saw the Giants make a record disappear,
Upsetting the Pats in an undefeated year.

David Tyree pulled off magic and his catch did the trick,
Giving the G-Men their third Superbowl championship.

From there Brett Favre battled to make up his mind,
But decided to leave his NFL days behind.

In March all the talk was of Davidson’s Curry,
Showing tournament followers, little guys score in a hurry.

Alas, in the end it was the Jayhawks who soared,
As Mario Chalmers took the Most Outstanding Player award.

Formula One Racing will be far from the same,
‘Cause in April Mrs. Patrick put all boys to shame.

She was the first woman to win a real race,
Capturing the flag in an impressive first place.

In hockey the Red Wings ruled every detail,
In June winning back the sport’s Holy Grail.

The Larry O’Brien was painted in Green,
As the Celts’ latest title was number 17.

Tiger, like Pierce, played with a bad limb,
Neither torn ligament or tibia would keep him from the win.

He nipped Rocco Mediate in the clutch by a stroke,
But it wasn’t til after when his leg was found broke.

Michael Phelps ruled in August in the Olympic-sized pool,
Collecting eights golds as he took all to school.

His eighth broke Mark Spitz’ record for the most in one Games,
But it was the mighty Usain Bolt who set the nation in flames.

Bolt won major sprints, doing so with ease,
Leaving nothing for competitors but a warm Jamaican breeze.

Then in September Favre wanted to come back,
But Green Bay decided to move his aerial attack.

He left for the Big Apple, tried his luck as a Jet,
But the team missed the playoffs, even with Brett.

In October the Phillies took it all from the Rays,
While left-hander Hamels took home all the praise.

T’was the highest of points in the Phillies’ careers,
Bringing the city their second title in 126 years.

In December Sam Bradford won college’s big prize,
But his Heisman over others was a bit of a surprise.

In football the Lions finished 0-16,
A feat that, until then, had never been seen.

It’s NFL playoff time now at the end of ’08,
And both hockey and basketball head towards the All-Star break,

It all leaves the next year looking quite bright,
So happy ’09 to all and to all a good night.
