From east to west: The NHL’s Central Division

For too long the NHL’s Central Division has been much of the same, year in and year out, with the Detroit Red Wings ultimately standing the only legitimate chance of making noise in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Heading into the 2010-11 season, however, we may be looking at some new storylines. Specifically some that involve the newly-reloaded Columbus Blue Jackets.

The Flame that never flickered

Time is running out for the veteran Calgary Flames if they hope to capitalize on the fast-shrinking windows of Jarome Iginla and Miikka Kiprusoff. On good days the aged pair are enough to guide the stagnant club to wins in the tough Western Conference, but they’ll need to find other signs of success if they hope to squeeze back into the playoffs.

Underdog deals may help shape East

A pair of under-the-radar transactions in the NHL this offseason may not carry the clout of a Dany Heatley deal or Brad Richards signing, but may end up being the two most significant roster moves made by playoff teams looking to shore up their odds of contention in 2011-12. Under much scrutiny for underachieving in […]

From east to west: The NHL’s Southeast Division

There was a time when the Southeast Division was referred to as the South ‘Least’ due to its lack of intrigue and poor attendance records. While attracting fans to the arena on a nightly basis is still a struggle, the Southeast is quickly becoming one of the most electrifying divisions in all of hockey. Most […]

Habs and Leafs: Rediscovering the rivalry

For what’s regularly billed as one of the most significant rivalries in the NHL, the tension between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens seems to have tapered off in recent years, especially in comparison to other such rivalries like Montreal-Boston and even Toronto-Ottawa. When in its illustrious history did things start to change?

From east to west: The NHL’s Atlantic Division

Teams in the Atlantic Division, more specifically the Pittsburgh Penguins, enter the season with great uncertainty as to whether Sidney Crosby, the face of the NHL, will return at some point or continue to man the sidelines. Sir Crosby’s health dramatically affects the outcome of the coastal division, as the 24-year-old’s impact on each game […]

Among offseason tragedies, positives abound in NHL

They say negativity is contagious. This past offseason, the NHL caught the bug. If one stretches past the summer and into the 2010-11 season, it has been a heartbreaking year for the greatest game on ice. Suspensions were frequent and head shots were rampant. Most infamously, the professional hockey community sustained nearly 50 deaths over […]

Hockey’s endless fight: A roundtable discussion

An already hot button topic in the past, following a dreadful summer, fighting has become the holy grail of issues in the game of hockey. The main arguing point, however, is if it is truly an issue to begin with. The Good Point writers Anthony Petrielli and Jeff Blay have teamed up with The Hockey […]

Prospects and promise: What to make of the 2011-12 Oilers

Despite hope in Edmonton last September, stemming mainly from the arrival of three dynamo prospects, the Oilers once again found themselves holding the first overall pick by season’s end. That made it two last-place finishes in a row for the “City of Champions.” It’s not surprising the Oilers placed as low as they did: they […]

From east to west: The NHL’s Northeast Division

Although three of its five teams advanced to the postseason in 2010-11, in terms of star talent and team success heading forward, the Northeast Division is far from elite. Whereas other divisions, like the Southeast, are anchored by the likes of Alex Ovechkin and Steven Stamkos, the Northeast consists of four mediocre teams that only […]
