Pray and pray for my downfall

The 2012 season was supposed to be a rough one for the Boise State Broncos. It was supposed to be the one that tested the mettle of Chris Petersen. It was supposed to be the one that finally broke the Boise magic. It was supposed to be the one to which every BCS proponent could […]

Classic Controversy

Arguably, it was the best one yet. Unquestionably, it was the most controversial. On December 22nd, 2012, at the Gale Centre in Niagara Falls, the Scaringis gathered for the fifth edition of the annual “Scaringi Winter Classic”. In what was a particularly exciting, fast-paced and tightly-contested hockey game, league officials had to step in a […]

Sports.ws Joins TheGP Family

As of the New Year, The Good Point will welcome the addition of a new community: fantasy sports giant Sports.ws. With a global fantasy basketball game at the heart of it all, Sports.ws has served as the longest standing free fantasy basketball website on the internet. (Yes, you read that right). Online in one form or another since 1995, and open to the public since 1999, Sports.ws has persevered as the most unique and engaging fantasy sports format available. This is going to be a fun year.

It’s still about the long ball

The Atlanta Braves have signed B.J. Upton, despite the fact that Michael Bourn proved to be a better option, statistically. Why? Because Upton hits more home runs. Is this a fair assessment of talent thought? It’s not like the long ball is the only thing that matters, and Bourn’s other skills almost universally trump Upton’s. Still, the Braves chose to sign Upton while Bourn continues to float in free agent limbo.

Questions for Canadians at the World Juniors

It’s no secret that Canadians are a little crazy over hockey, but are they crazy enough to wake up in the wee hours of the morning to watch the World Juniors from Russia? Matt Horner takes a decidedly Canadian approach to the tournament and asks some tough questions. After all, if Canada doesn’t win gold, they may as well have finished last.

An unlikely rematch of Super Bowl XLVI

Last year’s Super Bowl did not exactly go according to plan; at least not for the Patriots. This year, they’re primed for another playoff run while the defending champions are spinning their wheels as they battle for a division title. While a rematch in this year’s big game is a longshot, it’s one worth hoping for to see if the Patriots can enact revenge on the unlikely Giants.

One more for the road

This past weekend saw two remarkable milestones reached in hockey. First, Toronto Marlies forward Keith Aucoin scored his 800th-career point, becoming just the 11th player in AHL history to get there, while Ben Duffy of the QMJHL’s Prince Edward Island Rocket scored his 123rd goal, taking sole possession of first on the franchise’s all-time goal-scoring list.

Where have all the fans gone?

When the last NHL lockout took place, fans found all kinds of activities to fill the voids of their weekends. This time around? It seems like everyone has gone into hiding, just waiting for the imminent return of the NHL, as nothing else will appease their tastes.

Cracking up

Despite Andrea Bargnani’s attempts, there’s no hiding it: The Toronto Raptors are one of the worst teams in the NBA. With an abysmal record, extended losing streaks and dropping games in both heartbreaking and heart-wrenching fashion, there appears to be nowhere for the Dinos to go but up. But how does that start? Perhaps by making a scapegoat out of Bargnani?

New Flop City

Reggie Evans made a name for himself by being an underdog who made it to the NBA. He redefined that name by becoming known as the league’s most notorious flopper. With two fines for the egregious act already against him this season, Evans is quickly establishing a benchmark for most annoying player in the Association.
